remote server without monitor turned on

I'd like to be able to access my SUSE server from remote locations (work etc).

I've done this with SSH and VNC and can connect easily enough.

Now will this also work if the server Monitor is turned off. As I only use the server from remote locations it seems pointless to waste electricity and risk a potential fire hazard by leaving the monitor switched on.

I'm away from the installation at the moment otherwise I'd just try it.

Cheers

Hi,

If the server is running on a pc, then turning off the monitor is no problem. If it's running on some other hardware that need a terminal for output, it needs to be on.

Check the documentation that came with the (none pc) hardware to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Thanks -- I phoned home to get it turned off and the remote access still works perfectly.

SSH and the built in VNCSERVER make it great even to handle GUI (KDE) remotely. It even works between running a Vista Guest VM and a Windows XP pro VM on the remote machine and a Windows XP Pro Vm on the Laptop I'm using.

Communication works between all VM's and the two hosts. I haven't upgraded to 10.1 yet but will try later as VMWARE 5.5.2 is out and has been fixed to support SUSE 10.1 and SLED 10.

Cheers

If you want an even better experience, use NXinstead of VNC!
