http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ is the site for the APT4RPM built for SuSE. It also leads you to Synaptic. Read a lot before you use it and and be sure to use a very conservative component set when you try it. Make sure you do a good backup and then play for a while. My first try I over did the component list and ended up with a "bleeding edge" system. I use it instead of Yast because it resolves "almost all" issue automatically for me. The e-mail group is very helpful. Good luck.
hi,
My yast online update is unble to connect to the network.. n gives an error when i try to use it.. but my pc is connected to the network n all the browsers work.. what cud the problem b ?? .. n thats y i wanted to use apt
rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.2-i386 base update security funktronics kde3-stable mozilla packman packman-i686 suser-rbos
this is the apt source.list I use for my SuSE 9.2 Pro system. Base, update, and security are the base systems. Funtronics gives some nice extras. kde3-stable and mozilla are pretty self explanatory. packman and packman-i686 give you access to full MPlayer easily. suser-rbos gives access to apt and synaptics upgrades. Good luck.
I lost my Yast connections with 9.1 as well. If I recall I could connect by manually starting the Yast watcher and requesting a connection.
the problem is that yast is not able to connect to the net.. n gives an error - 'check network connection'.. is there a way to set up proxies for yast online update..
Sorry, but you've gone beyond my Yast knowledge now. I would suggest you read the information on APT4RPM and Synaptic. It was pretty easy to install and setup. Look at the source.list I mentioned above. I am pretty pleased with it and it works well. BUT - read first and understand what it does. Then use it.
I seem to recall a note on the SuSE site about a change that was made in the Yast servers that would cause older software to break. You might check that out.
hi,
I success fully installed apt ans synaptic in suse.I configured the proxies also but it is not able to reload the package list it reports
all this trash
here i am pasting wat it gave

The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

bye,

One of the issues you must watch with APT is to have a properly named set of components. The combination of the URL and the component names must all be correct. Look at the one I put in an earlier post. Feel free to copy it, but note that it is 9.2 specific. If you are 9.1 just change the numbers. I have had that message when I mis-spell a component name. Good luck.
