Question about kernel in SLES9-x86-64

I install SLES9 in AMD Athlon 64, and change the value of kernel "Processor
family" to "Amd-Opteron/Athlon64", then recompile the kernel, when reboot,
it shows more error messages, the finial line is:
<0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

I want to know how can I change the value?
Thanks

"I want to know how can I change the value?"

Sure, that's a simple one. You'll just have to recompil eevery single package on the system :-D

Other than that, leave the processor type alone.

hmmm...
Does it must point out the cpu type in /usr/src/linux/Makefile ?
Do I need add -mcpu, -march or other in this file?
