Problems with upgrading Leap 42.3 to Leap 15.0
 

Hi,
I downloaded 15 made an iso and set about installing leap 15

I have reached a point where, on a black screen, I'm told:

The screen locker is broken and unlocking is not possible anymore.

In order to unlock, switch to a virtual terminal (eg Ctrl + Alt + F2),
Login and execute the command
loginctl unlock-sessions
Afterwards, switch back to the running session (eg Ctrl + Alt + F7)
===================

I can switch but there is half a cursor on the left of the screen and nothing I type is entered on the screen.

I tried to login as root with psswd anyway, but there is no response, leaving me only to switch back to the 'sessions locked ' message.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

what did you do or not do to prepare for doing a "zypper dup"

as in taking care of any installed third party repos and software

also is this a desktop? laptop" tablet?

and is it using intel , AMD, or nvidia 3d card / chip

and what is that card/chip model

I changed the repo URLs to point to the new version (i.e. replaced 42.3 with 15.0) with YaST->Software Repositories, and then ran "zypper dup" to upgrade.

During that process, I elected to uninstall all that conflicted.

All seemed well as it started downloading and preparing over 3000 files.

I left it to get on with it but got that message when I came back to the screen.

I am sure I could simply reboot back into 42.3 but having come this far, I would rather see if the problem can be resolved here.

did you burn the iso to a dvd ? or make a bootable thumb drive ?

pop in the dvd and select "upgrade an existing system


that most likely killed the upgrade

next time select " upgrade with vender change "

then after the upgrade if needed you can change those

also, like RHEL, suse uses "priorities"

things like ( on my system ) the repo "Application:/Geo/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/"
GDAL has a conflict with "nvidia-computeG03" in "nvidia.com/opensuse/tumbleweed"

i set the GEO repo to a priority of 85 and leave nvidia at 99


The FIRST thing i do on a system upgrade is burn the iso to a dvd !! 8 times out of 10 i will NEED IT
and i have been using fedora and suse and cent / rhel for 13+ years

second i uninstall the games ( they are only a few mouse clicks to reinstall later )


PS i am still on my FIRST cup of coffee and just woke up
if needed i can post longer and better directions and help guide later

Yes!

I guess, because I did zypper dup, I never got any options!

My selection to uninstall was done for every program I had added, none of which were games.

I don't remember seeing anything for nvidia!

I'm going to shut the system down and attempt to boot from the CD.

Do you not have an internet connection when running openSUSE? If you do, why would you download the 15.0 .iso only do upgrade using 'zypper dup'? Where did you execute 'zypper dup'? It should only be done outside a GUI session, as https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:System_upgrade warns, so that the GUI session won't be aborted and leave your system in a broken state. If none of the vttys ever produce a login prompt for you, your only way out is likely only Ctrl-Alt-Del, or cutting the power, and hoping boot into the existing system is possible. If not, then using that downloaded .iso to do an offline upgrade should hopefully convert whatever state it's in to a working 15.0.

Both my older Optiplex 780 and my 760 were upgraded from 42.3 to 15.0 via 'zypper dup' without incident. My newer 780 got a new disk, so I went directly to 15.0 (and TW, and Debian Stretch) on it.

Got completely bogged down during the upgrade trying to get wlan0 connected to the outside world so as to get the correct repos. Went round and round.
Eventually backed off and rebooted into 42.3 to see what was going wrong and the machine booted up into 15 to my great surprise.

Didn't like that very much, only rebooted out of desperation.
