Problems playing mp3 files

I installed SuSE 10 distro last week and I got a little problem.
This is my fstab file :
/dev/hdb2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda1 /windows/C ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0
/dev/sda1 /windows/D vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0
/dev/hdb5 /windows/E vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0
/dev/hdb6 swap swap defaults 0 0

On /windods/C as well as on /windows/E I got lots of mp3 files which i try to play with xmms and amarok. I tried to drag & drop the files in the xmms's playlist as i used to do in Suse 9 but nothing happens. I right click on the file and select the open with option but still nothing happens. In general i tried all kinds of ways to play an mp3 file. I also copied some mp3 files at my reiserfs partition and tried to open them from there but it won't play.
Can someone please help me? Thanks in advance.

hi there,
can you use a console player (ex. mplayer) and let us know the error messages please?

Sorry but im new to Linux. What command should i type to start it?

Irrelevant: I just read the book you indicate in your signature. Isn't Socrates amazing?

slackie1000 06-06-2006 07:54 AM

hi there,
indeed Socrates is really interesting.
about your problem now. i am almost sure that Suse 10 won't support mp3 out of the box. my suggestion is: open a terminal and try to play a mp3 from the cli.
Code:

mplayer your_mp3_file
xine your_mp3_file
...

after that you can post some errors that might help us finding your problem.

you need to install the 'mad' rpm

have a look at:-

http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=662

I installed the mad rpm but still got the problem.
It seems i don't have the mplayer installed.
With XINE i get the message: The steam my_file.mp3 use an unsuported codec: audio codec MPEG1 layer3 CBR (0x0) but is xine an audio player?I didn't know that.
Did this message help at all?

Ok. I can't understand what's going on: I loaded an old playlist i kept as a backup when i had suse 9 installed and some of the songs are playing. When i click to view the file info on the files that played i get normal infos but when i do the same for files that didn't play i get the message:Input plugin:No input plugin recognized this file.
This means i have to download a plugin?
And if yes where can i find it?
Linux is fascinating but the mitigation from Windows is a little bit weird:-)

you may find this thread helps:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=429396

it says that suse linux doesn't support mp3 playing out of box due to (stupid) license issues. you can browse to your mp3 files but not play it untill you manually install xmms-lib-mad-...rpm

you can search this rpm if you don't have one.

teh easiest way is to uninstall Xine Amorak and kaffiene with yast, turn of the CD instalation source then reisnatll them all form packman (sorry cant remember the url)
taht solved my problems on suse 10.0,
still trying to find an online reposotory for 10.1, though for those few RPMS a 10.0 repos might work
