Problems installing October updates to 10.2

I'm having problems installing Suse 10.2 updates from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/update/10.2/rpm/i586/

I started with Smart, which found many updates. All installed but those from the above channel. Smart actually crashes, so it provides no error messages.

I tried Yast2, and it couldn't find any updates at all.

So, I steered my way to the above ftp site and tried to install rpms by downloading them and selecting to install, as opposed to save to disk. I tried with two xorg rpms. Both failed after considerable churning because the rpms were "invalid".

Does anyone have a work around?
