Unhappy Problem with restoring Suse partition from image

Hello there,

I have dual OS, win XP in disk0part0 and Suse in disk0part2.
I installed win first and then Suse. Suse (Enterprise Server 10)
have automatically set up GRUB for the 2 OS.

It works fine, but!

I made some images from the Linux partition with symantec ghost 8.2,and if I restore the Linux partition from image my system goes unbootable.
I got a blank screen at startup with a GRUB label on the corner.

I changed the active boot partition with a disk tool to part0 from part2 (though Suse set it to part2) and then I can boot into windows, but in this case I must say goodbye to my Linux system.
I have also tried to set up LILO in part0 from windows but failed. (

Maybe someone help me to get my beloved Suse back?

A solution for how to avoid this in the future would be even better.

Thanks

What is 'made some images'?

If you make a image of the whole partition correctly and restore it, then you should be having no problems. Are the images ok? It is also possible that ghost-8.2 has some bug...

Yes, I made an image from the whole partition and then restored it.
And it always worked well in a single OS environment.

I also suppose that ghost 8.2 is the guilty.
I am not really familiar with MBR LILO and GRUB but my feeling is GRUB is the newer booting program and ghost 8.2 can not handle it. I suppose GRUB bootloader resides in the linux partition and ghost somehow forget to save it. (??) Maybe it could handle LILO?

I will try with other backup stuff, like Ghost For Linux and will post my experiences.

thx

Grub is much better than Lilo.
You can try the Super Grub Disk (if it is a bootloader problem)

This can happen because the partition names might have changed -- for instance what was defaults /dev/hda3 for example might now be /dev/hda

I've had similar problem with ACRONIS restore image.

What you do is boot your install disk -- go for new installation then REPAIR SYSTEM option. DON'T RE-INSTALL OR YOU WILL LOSE EVERTHING

Check GRUB and FSTAB --- fix entries and you'll be up and running again.

Cheers

I didn't renamed my partitions.

I tried the REPAIR SYSTEM option from the CD, but it failed to fix the bootloader.
When it came to reinstall GRUB it gave an error it cannot find disk(0,2) or something like that.
I think ghost8.2 created completely wrong image from my partition so these repair options cannot help me.

I reinstalled Suse since than, so I already lost my data.
This time I configured GRUB to reside in MBR instead of the Linux partition and I will use G4L backup stuff instead
of that *** ghost. (sorry for the outrage :S )

Hoping the best it will work next time I need to restore previous state of the Linux system...

It is smoothly worked with Powerquest Imagecenter backup stuff. I restored linux, and no problem occurred.
Two possible reasons:
1)GRUB must be on the MBR if we want to use create/restore image
2)Ghost8.2 is a piece of ***. (more likely)

I also try G4L, but it simply didn't worked for me.
