Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

The personal version of Suse was made for those who would not be compiling their own software. There are a lot of people out there who may prefer not to compile their own software and use whatever package management system that was provided by the distro. So yeah there are people who use linux who may never have used gcc or make.
Downloaded the first CD from opensuse....however my wireless didnt configure. So I search and find some answers including madwifi, and ndiswrapper, but also find out my network card was supported in previous versions and taken out!
Anyway...have a coffee and get to work...find the chipset drivers and want to compile them...no problem, some guy has good instructions on how he did it....get to "make"...bash tells me no such command....ok...thats strange, there was only 270 odd Meg on the first CD, why not squeeze in make? No problem...another coffee, get to work....rpm make in, and run the command...."gcc" not recognised by bash....huh???????!!!!! Look at the system, no compiler on board...grrrrr....ok, download the compiler....another coffee...get to work....src not found....Ah of course...why would I need the bloody source, I havent got a compiler anyway!
Another coffee...downloading Debian.
