problem installing openSUSE 10.2
 

Ive got openSUSE 10.2 on the cds.

The problem I am facing is during installation. When I start installing after going through the partitioning and stuff, everything is smooth till the installation from the CD 1 is done. After this, the system Reboots (Initial boot) and when I boot into the OS, there's just a screen with the openSUSE logo and a text box of sorts above it. There is no text whatsoever anywhere, not even around the textbox. If i try writing something in the 'textbox' it doesnt show. If I press a few keys, a command line appears asking me to login with a login and password (which is supposed to be setup at a later stage in the installation). Theres nothing I can do beyond this point except a restart. I also read on the SUSE website ( www.opensuse.org) that the installation requires CD1 to CD3 for the most basic installation. But I havent been prompted anywhere to insert the CD2 during the installation. I think only 40% of the installation gets completed. What could be the problem?

I would like you to note that this computer has only 128 MB of ram. The installer does not use YAST2, but a keyboard-based fallback instead because of low memory. Is this a problem solely because of the low RAM? I have set aside a 260 MB swap partition. Will increasing the swap size help? How much swap will b ideal? Or is increasing RAM the only solution?

I followed the instructions given here: http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version I verified the Checksums and they were good. When I did the install 2 out 5 of my disks were bad and I had to re-burn them. The iso files were good but 2 of the disk burns still failed. Every thing else went fine with 256 Mb of RAM.

This is only my second SUSE install, but I'm betting it's not your 128 RAM killing it.

the installation was by the YAST2 installer in your case I guess...can u plz tell me what was the procedure after installation from the CD1 was done? There is a reboot and then?

I don't remember exactly, but I do know that there was a popup telling when to insert each disk and no command prompt. Did you do Checksum on your downloads? It should be smooth at the point you are. You are not far along so it should be easy to start over if you have good CDs.

does anyone have a solution for this problem because i also have this problem and i have check the md5 checksum of the iso and i have verified the media with the installer and both have checked out fine but my install only installs the first CD and never asks for CD 2. It boots up and theres no text. if someone has found a solution for this problem plz tell me i really want to install openSUSE.
