Printer setup in SUSE to work from WinXP notebook

Hello

I have successfully installed (dual boot) SUSE 9.3 on our desktop now. I can see my WinXP files both in the desktop's windows partition, and on my WinXP wireless notebook. I even got it set right so I can access pages on my apache server on the Linux side of my desktop from my notebook. My problem is I still can't get to my printers from the notebook when the desktop is booted to Linux. The printers work fine from the desktop when it's in SUSE (and Windows). The notebook doesn't even see the printers when SUSE is booted. I've done a lot of searches for this problem, but no solution seems to fix it.

Is it just not possible to print to a Linux machine from a WinXP notebook?

Yes, it's possible. You can share the printer through the samba protocol. Therefore you need to install the samba server package. You can do the configuration with YaST.

I already set up samba. I just checked it and all the printer settings are enabled. There must be one that has an incorrect setting.

Check your firewall settings if the netbios ports are open. Sometimes it helps to address the printer using the IP address instead of the netbios name.

I'll give the address trick a try. I don't think it could be the firewall because I shut them down while I was working on it. I even shut off Windows firewall on the notebook just to be sure.

I'm stuck at work for the weekend so I have to wait till Monday to play again.

I gave the IP address a try without any luck. I might just be still too green at this. I disabled all the firewalls, I can see the desktop using Linux by pinging either 192.168.1.255 or hpdesktop which was the network name I gave it. I tried to set up a new printer fro the WinXP notebook using the new printer wizard. It wouldn't detect any printers at all. I tried to tell it to find a network printer called hpdeskjet990c at /dev/usb/lp0 but that saw nothing either. I know I'm missing something obvious as a newbe, but I just hate to be beaten by a computer.

sorry --I got it the wrong way round --you are trying to print from Linux via the Windows notebook.

I've had some issues in the past -- I'll have a look at this later --I'm happy my Linux is working fine so I don't boot into 'doze very much but will try this later.

Cheers
