Unhappy Possible to have both Gnome and KDE?

HellO
I'm new to Linux. Using SuseLinux 9.2 Took all the default install options and KDE was installed. Can I also install Gnome (and how, please). I would like to see Gnome and would like to be able to use Galeon web browser which I understand requires Gnome and Mozilla. Will I be able to switch back and forth between Gnome and KDE (and how, please).
Thanks for any help (and please assume I know nothing).

Yes, it is possible to have both Gnome and KDE. I use KDE, but some of the software I like requires Gnome libraries, so I just went ahead and installed it the whole thing.

Since I use Slackware, I found a link on the Slackware wiki that pointed towards a Slack-friendly Gnome.

Maybe this link will help you. If you do a search for Gnome Suse you'll find some useful links (I can't post a link yet. I'm a LQ newbie.)

Hi MrsHill, it's possible to have both Desktop Environments KDE and GNOME installed in Suse 9.2. In order to install GNOME you have to use YaST, this is the configuration tool that allows you to setup your system, configure your hardware and install software among other things.
Click the start button, then go to System and then click on YaST, it'll ask you the root password (that is the system administrator password) and then you'll have to choose Software, and from the right panel Software Management. Once there in the Filter list, choose Selections, this will put packages in several groups, you'll see that KDE Desktop Environment is already selected and below that there is a package group called GNOME System, click in the box besides this group and then click the buttom Accept. This will start the installation of all the packages required for GNOME and all the dependencies. I suppose you installed from the 5 cds of SuSE 9.2, so YaST will ask you to put them in order complete the installation. If everything goes right, you'll have to click again so YaST finishes the configuration and finally you click Finish. Voila! you have GNOME installed.

Please post again if you have problems installing GNOME, in order to switch from KDE to GNOME you have to go again to YaST, but this time choose System and then /etc/sysconfig Editor. Once there choose Desktop by doing click in the box, so it'll give you more options, choose Display manager and finally select DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN, from the options that YaST give you, erase any user name you see there, then click Finish. This will prevent SuSE to autologin any user when booting the computer. So when you logout or reboot the computer, you'll have a screen with the avaiable users of the system, once you choose your user name you'll have to type your user password, BUT before clicking enter you 'll notice in the bottom of the screen (I believe) there is an option that says Session, click here and choose GNOME from the list, and you'll start GNOME.

Finally keep in mind that SuSE was and I still believe is KDE centric, so the GNOME desktop environment is not well polished as KDE. After trying you can have your own conclusions.
