Question Please advise on upgrade suse 9.1 to 10.2/3

I have an already old version of suse (9.1) as active web/mail server. I am thinking about upgrade the OS to 10.2 or 10.3
I have a 640 MB RAM i686 machine running the server.

I read about live upgrades and clean updates. What is the best way to upgrade?
Please advise!

Thanks!

Ask yourself: DO you REALLY need to upgrade? If it's working fine and patches/updates are still coming out for SuSE 9.1, then why break it?

The thing is that I also want to use subversion and possible some other server programs on this webserver. Looking at the required version I'd better have an upgrade. If you have a suggestion for this whilst staying on level 9.1, please advise!

On the other hand, what are the better approaches anyway when you want to keep up with latest versions? Reinstall or upgrade over the current installation?

Personally I think it's always better to do a clean install over an upgrade. For me, the best approach is to keep /home on a separate directory, then install a new version of the distro "around" /home.

I just installed SuSE v10.3 this way and so far, so good

If you choose to upgrade, be aware that glibc and RPM have been upgraded in opensuse 10.3, which means that you must not interrupt the update process or you will have serious problems. I have upgraded from 10 to 10.2 to 10.3 without any serious issue.

Do you have any suggestions on the mail server part. I am using Cyrus as IMAP server.

I would do a clean install. There are so many changes been made between 9.1 and 10.3 it would probably better to do a backup and clean install.
