Playing DVDs

How on Earth do I get Kaffeine or XINE or whatever to play DVDs?
I'm running 9.1 pro/KDE
It says we can't do this blah, blah, blah...when I put a dvd in even though I used the DVD drive to install the darn OS from a DVD.
I've DL'ed and installed plugins till I crashed my system and had to reinstall it.
Surely someone out there can spell it out in plain English as to how I can do this.
Heeeeellllllllllpppppppppppppppppp.........

Can you post exact details of your problem including how you have tried to play the dvds.

I'll put a dvd in and it says 'open with kaffeine' - I click OK.
Now it says 'Warning: This version of xine lacks support for playing DVD disks for legal reasons'
Then it say go to SuSE for details
Of course SuSE says NO player plays DVDs
AT the bottom of kaffeine it says
xine error no input plugin

Thats some of the plugin stuff I tried that crashed me I guess.

Thats because the version of Xine shipped with Suse is crippled. You can get a good version of xine from xine's nightly builds age. You will also need to install libdvdcss and win32 codecs. It may help if you uninstall all Suse Xine packages before installing the ones from the xine site.

Ahhh! I already did that, but I didn't uninstall the SuSe xine packages first - thats probably what crashed me. I'll try again. Thanks redazz........

REDAZZ - it worked like a charm. Deleting the SuSE xine files first was the key! I'm one happy DVD watching fool now - I can't thank you enough........CM

The same solution worked for me with 9.2 but didn't with 9.3. I added mplayer to the mix and still no cigar. Then I added the kmplayer KDE front end and all is well.

I read the instructions on http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/ as suggested. When I got to installing RealPlayer to get full RP format support I was confronted with not having /usr/sbin/update-alternatives on my system. So now I might soon have a functioning xine, but I've lost my RealPlayer that was previously functioning.

Any suggestions?

I figured it out. The instructions recommended installing a Debian file. I found the equivalent SuSE rpm that doesn't need /usr/sbin/update-alternatives.

Now on to the next question. If I am supposed to be able to hear RealPlayer files why does the url pnm://138.80.0.10:7070/encoder/livetopfm.rm?cloakport=8080,554,7070 work with RealPlayer8 but not with Kaffeine. There must be another set of codecs that I need. There are several other similar situations, although in general they do work.

Thanks for all the help.

Easy tutorial

For those who are still having problems with installing a workable DVD player in SuSE I found this
website with a very easy to understand tutorial.

I _always_ recommend to have a look to the rpm mplayer package at http://packman.links2linux.org

You can also add packman as installation source in yast and automatically resolve all dependencies. Simply great.
