I have this version installed: glibc-2.3.5-40
and when i try to update the package this happens
# rpm -Uvh glibc-2.4-25.i586.rpm

glibc = 2.3.5 is needed by (installed) glibc-devel-2.3.5-40
Do i need to download this version, where or what can i do.

Why do you need to update your glibc? Messing around with glibc can leave you with a broken system, so always do this if necessary. To solve your problem, you have to install glibc-locale and glibc-devel that have the same version as the glibc you are trying to install.

You will need to resolve the dependencies(as reddazz said). This could be a problem, as programs may need the current version of glibc to function, and so will not allow you to upgrade.

The best way to do it is in a package manager like smart. It will take care of the dependencies as long as it can access them from a repository.
