orinoco monitor mode in suse 9.2?

monitor mode is not enabled by default in 9.2. actually i have heard it may be on, except if you have firmware 8.72, which of course i have. (but i'm not sure if that's true)

i have read that you can compile the driver into my kernel, but that's a little advanced for me, i'm trying to avoid it unless it's a last resort. (of course you've got to learn sometime...)

anyway, i got the orinoco-0.15rc1 driver here: http://ozlabs.org/people/dgibson/dldwd/
i successfully compiled the driver. i stopped pcmcia, i modprobed orinoco_cs, i started pcmcia, but i still don't have monitor mode according to iwpriv or kismet.

obviously i'm doing something wrong, but i don't know what. i'm sure someone has this working. please help!

Same problem, any help appreciated. Just curious, if this capability was in Suse 9.0 and 9.1, why did they upgrade by taking it out of 9.2?

...

well, i think i figured it out. the newer orinoco drivers aren't stable on any 8.x firmware, and some 7.x. because of the instability the capability was removed from the drivers. suse didn't remove the drivers, they just upgraded to a newer version. so it's recommended that you flash your card to a 6.x firmware.

mine's a rebadge (dell truemobile 1150) and i can't find a firmware updater that will allow me to flash to 6.x. i've read you can hex edit an oem updater and remove the PNP identifier, but i've yet to get that straight.

good luck.
