OpenSuSE - CPU does not support full virtualization

Hello,

After installing and rebooting 2.6.25.5-1.1-xen kernel on OpenSuSE 11, starting XEN server through virt-manager I tried to create virtual machine and got following message:

"The processor(s) in this machine do not support full virtualization"

Machine is AMD Athlon 64-bit X2 and here is the content of /proc/cpuinfo:

When viewing "flags" portion of file there is nothing to implicate that CPU supports full virtualization.

I understand why possibly CPU is not capable of doing virtualization, but i used VirtualBox in Fedora and it worked fine so i guess CPU actually CAN do virtualization except maybe VirtualBox works somehow different.

Any ideas what to do to enable it on this CPU ? Can maybe BIOS update do the trick ?

Thanks,

Josip

certain classes of processor have a virtualization capability built in and AMD 64 Athlon socket 939's do not - you need socket am2 or Intel c2d (and maybe some of the later P4's).

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization

Thanks for your advice ! :) I'll only rearrange my hardware in this case and put OpenSuse on machine with appropriate CPU.

I don't know much about Xen but was what you got a warning message and not an error, meaning Xen will run but there is an added hw ability that it can't take advantage of. It's my understanding that Xen will work without the "full" virtualization of the message you posted.

Also, Suse can run either VMware server and player as well as VirtualBox using an 3800+ X2 as I've done both with tha exact processor.
