OpenSuse apt-get upgrade SUPER

Ok so I hosed my OpenSUSE system today. Looking through the docs using the SUPER rpms seemed like a good idea. NOT.

Every package that I upgrade broke. Apps I use all the time like Gaim and Firefox wouldn't even start.

So I am back to square one. The only way I see to fix things is to do a reinstall.

I tried uninstalling the reinstalling packages using YAST/You but it didn't seem to fix the problems. Gaim still wouldn't start and Firefox crashed if I clicked on any button.

I have the Beta1 cds, so my options are reinstall then upgrade(the upgrade to beta2 took 2 hours), download the beta3 cds and reinstall using them.

Also found out using prelink on a slow system like my laptop with a P3 750 and 256MB ram is a bad idea. After every time I installed anything it took almost an hour to run.

Ah the fun of playing with betas, especially messing with a beta project lik SUPER while testing a beta. :) God I love Linux.

How about using Automatic repair? It usually searches for missing packages and helps restore broken system.

Just what I needed to hear.
NOT.

After a less than inspiring intro to Suse with 9.2 a couple of months back, I was just tonight looking at downloading OpenSuse.

Damn.

Perhaps stable version is better in this case. 9.3 Pro instead of open 10 betas. Run it on Laptop. Fantastic!

Nah - Gotta be Open or nothing.
I'll trash my Solaris build and whack it on there to try it out.

Tried the repair no go.

The beta is/was not the problem it was trying to use APT along with the SUPER rpms that broke things.

The beta worked just fine. I had originally installed Beta1 then used the System Upgrade to upgrade to beta2 then beta3. All without any problems.

I didn't really notice any bugs. At least not until I screwed things up.

In the end....

... that's what Betas are for.
