openSUSE 64bit installation hangs after initialising catalogues

Hi all,

about a year ago I bought myself Suse Linux 10.0 64bit. A couple days ago I downloaded the ISO DVD image of openSUSE 64bit (md5sum verified). I boot from the cd (new installation) and it starts up the Yast2 installer in graphical mode. After selectig the installation language, the installer reads the package list from the DVD. After the message initialising catalogues the Yast2 installer hangs. It displays the running clock indefinetly. You can click un the Abort, Help or Next buttons but there's no reaction.

After searching a bit on the internet and this form, I've found that loading the amd74xx driver could be a problem. I've tried all the other installation selections after boot (Safe mode installation, APIC disabled, Local APIC disabled, ...). They all hang but I see that for the local APIC disabled, another driver is loaded (nv_sata) but it then the Yast2 installer doesn't even start.

Can anyone give me some information to get this openSUSE 10.2 64bit running. (I tried before installing the 32bit version and that gave me the same problem after initialising catalogues).

I have a K8N Diamond mother board and a Amd64 dual core processor with a NVIDIA 7800 GTX grphic card.

Thanks for your reply,

Mark

Problem caused I/O errors on sda1

I switched to the logging console with ALT+CTRL+F4 and saw that the sda1 hard disk was causing the halt during the Yast2 setup:

Buffer I/O error on sda1, logical block 6296576

That's my hard disk with a couple of NTFS and a not working windows XP installation (windows XP failed to boot probably because of the same reason).

For now I switched sata1 and sata2 and disabled sata2 (NTFS partitions with I/O errors) and installed openSUSE 10.2 without any problems.

Except that I had to use the rt2500 module instead of the rt2500pic module to get my wireless network card working.

I still have two questions. How can I remove the 3(NXDOMAIN) bash prompt or replace it with something else?

Can I repair the NTFS partition in linux? Or should I just try to say as much data as I can by copying the data to a linux partition?

Thanks for your reply,

Mark
