Opensuse 11.3 display issues, only get GUI in failsafe mode

Hi,

I've just updated from Opensuse 11.0 to 11.3 and am now having some issues, I wonder if anyone can help.

Basically the system looks like it's booting fine, then at the point where the login manager would normally come up, the whole system freezes and I get a blank screen, it looks like the monitor isn't receiving any input at all.

If I start the system in failsafe mode, everything works fine, but obviously subject to the inherent limitations of failsafe mode.

Also, I notice that the Graphics Card & Monitor module in YaST won't load (or isn't there), nothing happens if I click on it.

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem and what I might be able to do about it?

My graphics card is pretty old, as is the rest of the system - it's an nVidia GeForce4 MX400. The monitor is an AOC LM720AU LCD monitor running at 75Hz.

All suggestions gratefully received.

When I installed openSUSE 11.3 on a Compaq Presario 5000 (made in 2000, came with Windows Me, very old) the graphics display works at the login, then freezes, from a LiveCD install. As I tried to diagnose this, I realized that they took sax2 out. (sax2 means SUSE Advanced X Configuration, what you saw under the Graphics Card and Monitor. They removed it in 11.3 from some reason and in 11.2 removed it from the program menu, but in 11.2 you could still get by typing in a root command prompt sax2). Also, I have heard that there were some issues updating 11.2 to 11.3, and a clean install works better. When you skip releases, upgrades don't work as well. Many of the 11.3 issues are not in 11.2 and 11.1. I have had many issues and due to them, I have a 11.2\11.3 dual boot on my system. To get openSUSE 11.1 or 11.2 (can't do this for 11.0 anymore, it's out of support), go to the site where you got 11.3 at openSUSE.org. In the address bar, you will see a 11.3 towards the end. Replace it with 112 to download 11.2 and 111 for 11.1. On this computer with issues like yours, I have tried the 11.1 install CD and it worked fine. But, I haven't tried 11.2 on it, as I've only have a DVD copy of 11.2. A lot of the bugs that are in 11.3 are not in 11.2. Good luck!

Have given up on 11.3 and am currently having a go at the 64 bit version of 11.2 on some new hardware. Encountering a couple of issues but at least I've got display!

Thanks for the reply and the advice.
