Question OpenSUSE 11.1 and Nvidia

I am using Suse versions since 10.1.
Recently I installed the last version (11.1) and I have serious problems with my Nvidia 6200.
All 3D applications (Kwin, Compiz, Googlearth, Second Life) are running very slow and sometimes with a lot of crashes.
I have tried to install the drivers either from the repositories via Yast or from the nvidia's website (via sh NVIDIA*****...etc). but the problem persist.

I never had problems with previous versions of Opensuse.

I tried to follow this guideline but i couldn't solve the problem.

I have also installed in the same machine (other partition) Debian Lenny and everything is working perfect with the same nvidia driver.

Could you propose me something?

Try this guide:

http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-...ler-HOWTO.html

The latest nVidia driver is from January of this year, is that the one you're using? Are you getting any errors in your x windows log? Can you describe it further, other than saying "very slow and sometimes with a lot of crashes"??

Thanks for the answer. I always follow the guide of the given lnk.

I use the 177.82 driver (the newer one is not available to the Suse repos yet).

I don't get any errors to my Xorg.0.log. Here is the NVIDIA's section to my log file:

Trying to give some examples....

Kwin--> When I activate the 3d effects they seems to be started but after some time the system freezes (can't do nothing and i have to Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter a terminal, give init 3 as root and init 5 to restart X)
Googlearth--> The program takes about 5 minutes to start and then the earth's movings using my mouse are very slow
Second Life--> A lot of cessations to the avatar's movings and after some minutes the mouse's pointer starts to freeze. I have to kill the Second Life's client in order to use my mouse correctly again.

I don't know if these examples helps but i don't have similar problems using my Lenny and I never had them in all previous OpenSUSE releases.

Thanks in adnvance

Then don't use the one from the repositories. Download the driver from nVidia, through the link provided before, and follow the instructions, which walk you through how to compile and install it. The one on the repository is older, the newer one probably addresses the problems you're encountering.

Seconded.

I also had performance issues (no crashes though) with the driver from the repository. Everythings fine now with the drivers directly downloaded from nvidia.
