Question OpenGL screensavers don't work

Hi,

I have an Nvidia 6200 Turbocache card installed on an Nforce4 mobo, with the latest Nforce/Nvidia drivers on SuSE 10 x86_64. I used to be able to run OpenGL screensavers, but no more. What can be wrong?

3Ddiag gives:

3Ddiag version 0.728
Verifying 3D configuration:
Using 3dinfo
************************************************************

Verifying 3D configuration for 3D board "nVidia Corporation GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) (10de@0161)":

Verifying driver installation:
nvidia ... failed!
======================= !!! WARNING !!! ========================
Due to license issues only a Dummy Nvidia 2D/3D driver with
Software 3D/OpenGL rendering is provided. Please download
the official 2D/3D Nvidia driver from the nVidia webserver
(http://www.nvidia.com), if you want to use 3D hardware

Tests for X.Org configuration:
Config File /etc/X11/xorg.conf ... done.
Driver ... done.
Extensions ... done.
Options ... done.

Checking GL/GLU/glut runtime configuration:
GL/GLU ... done (package xorg-x11-Mesa)
glut ... done (package freeglut)

NOTE: I do have nvidia (not nv) specified in my xorg.conf file.

Chromium BSU runs as if it was using hardware rendering - but this is a quick machine, so I can't really tell. I have had a look at /var/log/Xorg.O.log - and can't see any errors there - i.e. the system is using NVIDIA's glx and driver, but obviously 3Ddiag thinks there is a problem

Has anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Best wishes,

Jon.

Have you updated the graphics driver via yast2 or installed the driver manually?

Hi,

Hmm, I used the nvidia-installer - so no, not through Yast. Is that the problem? If so I can easily do the update through Yast - as I don't need any of the SLI features introduced with the latest driver.

Cheers, Jon.

Difference between nvidia installer and nvidia driver via You:
After a kernel update you have to reinstall the nvidia driver, when you use the installer.
After using the nvidia installer, you have to use sax2 to configure the driver:
on console:
login as "root"
init 3
sax2 -m0=nvidia

Hi,

Yeah - I have tried updating my system using the YOU method. It made no difference. What I found was that the user needs to be a member of the video usergroup for GL apps to work. To be honest, if I'd bothered to read Nvidia's release notes I would have seen this instruction. So in short, the *only* advantage of using the YOU installation method, is that you don't have to reinstall the Nvidia driver after a kernel update. However, if you want/need the latest Nvidia driver - you have to install it manually, since the YOU method always seems to pick up an older version.

Cheers, Jon
