The CD drive appears to still be busy reading, but nothing happens. I've tried the other cd drive, but the same error occurs. The disc loads under Windows, so I don't think it's scratched or damaged, but that'll be my next step unless someone here has a better solution.
Thanks in advance for helping a poor newbie... *grovels*

There could be many reasons. Please, more information is needed.
How old is your Gateway PC? What graphics does this PC have? How much memory? CPU? If your old Gateway is too old this may not work. Also, posting your Gateway model# etc ... allows a search to see if other's have been successful installing Linux on that model PC.
Did you download your Open SuSE? If so, I hope you:
a. compared checksum on website to that of the downloaded ISO files BEFORE you burned the CD,
b. burned to a hiqh quality CD at a slow speed (preferably the slowest speed your CD burner permits).
Can you boot to a text mode? ie.
Select Installation - Safe Settings and press F3 and select the text mode install. Does that work? If so, we can install your graphics later.
