Open SUSE 10.0 (64-bit) randomly freezes
 

hey all, I just got through building a new computer for my girlfriend. Here are the specs:

- AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Palermo 800MHz FSB 128KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor
- Gigabyte GA-K8NS Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard
- CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR 400 (PC 3200)Memory
- 200GB SATA hard drive
- eVGA nVidia GeForce 6600 256MB video

I installed Open SUSE 10.0 64bit edition, all of the CDs tested fine, and the install went off without a hitch.

However, I noticed that the system just goes into a random hard lock. It happened once when I was logging out of X to apply some changes or whatever, but didn't think much of it.

Then, when I was installing World of Warcraft, it just hard locked again.

Since it's a FULL hard lock, I can't get to anything to see if there are any error messages.

Anyone have any similar problems? Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this?

1. CPU overheated
2. Power supply not sufficient

Yeah, I would say that, or memory mistiming, so for sure, I would recommend testing all your hardware.

well, ran the Ultimate Boot CD overnight, and everything passed.

Only two options I can come up with are:

1) Power Supply
2) Software


The power supply is a Thermaltake TR2 W0070 ATX 430W, so it's pushing out enough power, I'm just wondering if it's doing it "right"

Ugh

1. The power supply is "sufficient"
2. Run memtest a while: http://www.memtest.org/. Check out if errors do occur.
3. I had the similar problem with overheated CPU: the computer stops without any cause and only boots a while of powerdown. During this time the CPU cools down.

I set Memtest to run last night before I went to bed, and when I woke up today it said there were no errors.

When I go to class tonight (I go to ITT-Tech), I'm bringing the power supply up there and having a friend of mine who's an electronics major run a test on it to make sure it works properly.

If it doesn't, then it's going back to Newegg and I'll just pick up another one at Fry's.

I know the heat sink is on correctly (b/c i'm ALWAYS triple-checking that), and all of the case fans are working properly.

I'm still thinking either Power Supply or Software issue.

If it's not the power supply, then I'll just have to figure out if there's something wrong with the Cd burn, or maybe the download.

We'll know more tonight.

I have a amd64, its an acer aspire 1522wlmi, runs under suse10.0 great...the only hing is that when i reboot or turn off instead of seen a screen or all the things that start to shut down(umount /dev/bla .....OK) i see a white screen that kinda looks like when your pc hangs up... but after a breif moment, it shuts down good. thats the only thing

power supply looks like it's ok, so I'm kinda out of ideas.

I'm downloading another 64-bit distro (FC4) right now and will give that a shot once I get the cd's burned.

if it's still acting up, then I'll know it's something hardware related. if not, then i'll just assume something glitched on the burn of the cd's for SuSE 10 (b/c i've tried a reformat/reinstall and it's still locking) or maybe it's just one of those freak things that her computer won't take that particular distro.

if so, her loss, b/c i'm running it and i like it :)

OK so I tried my power supply in her machine, and it still locked. that means the power supply, hard disk, processor, and RAM had all been tested and passed.

Only part left was the motherboard, so we ran to Fry's and bought another one, and it works just fine.

I'm posting this on her computer as we speak.

Now if I can just figure out why I can get WoW to work perfectly on my machine but not on hers, I'll be a happy man... but that's for another thread.

At least I know it's not SuSE doing it :)

Have you tried the new Nvidia drivers from their site? I put together a 64 bit system using Suse 10.0 and had issues until I loaded the new drivers. The ones from YaST may not be as new as the ones on Nvidia's site.

are you talking about issues with World of Warcraft? or issues with the freezing? b/c i took care of the latter.

PLEASE tell me you're talking about WoW, because I just plain can't get it to work on her machine with Cedega... which is odd b/c it works PERFECTLY on mine (with a little tweaking and a shell script i had to write).
