only 2 of 5 speakers are working

I recenlty configured my suse 9.1 desktop, which runs under kde and uses alsa as my sound system. however there is only sound comming out of 2 speakers instead of 5 (excl my woofer). The soundquality is great, however i like to have surround sound.
I'm 110% positive all cables are plugged in correctly (cause it used to work under mandrake).
I tried kmix/alsamix/alsagui etc. etc. but i can't figure out where to tell my system i've a 5.1 surround set with a woofer. what can i do?
thanks

Try Kmix. It had by far the simplest interface and I actually figured out what was going on with it.

Click the advanced box in the bottom left.

thank you for your quick reply.
i installed qamix 0.0.7 which seems to be a 1:1 copy of kmix (or the otherway around), they both have the same interface and options. and both of 'm don't have this 'advanced' option

Oh, really? Here is mine:

this one just shows the advanced button

this one shows what it looks like when you press it.

As you can see, there are weird ones like DAC (WTF?) and four channel mode that are boolean deals. playing with these gave me sound on both my big home stereo and the little speaker I have.

I've always found it easiest to use alsamixer from the konsole. There are settings in there to turn up the volume on to get the other speakers working.

I don't think it is a volume issue. It is a DAC or whatever thing. You can take the locks on and off there to edit those settings. Thing is, they don't make much sense.

In the second picture you see a lot of little green lights? Those advanced settings are boolean (on/off) values for things like 5.1 surround. In alsamixergui they are represented as locks to lock/unlock. Playing with these you will get what you want.

you have alsamixergui? If you don't alsamixer from the console is the same.

Here is a screenshot:

See all those things that say IEC9 blah blah blah?

These are settings, as are four channel mode and DAC exchange. You will not have the same settings that I have but something similar. You can click on the speakers on the top and change these. Playing with them you should be able to get what you want.
