Ode to a missing pointer (no, not a Bird Dog)

Hi,

Just ran the Suse 10.0 live DVD so as to not install Linux but give it a run through to see how I like it and... there's no mouse pointer. It didn't show in the boot-up sequence & didn't show once the desktop presented itself.

As I move the mouse around on the table I see buttons light up showing the mouse is indeed functioning but the pointer itself is not visible. Saw the Iguana but there was a window covering most of it showing an ethernet adaptor was ID'd. I thought about experimenting and seeing which hotkeys would affect the box but decided against it.

Alt Ctrl Delete worked So I used the keyboard to select restart, removed the DVD & windows started up again (No NTLDR not detected error... whew) and came here to ask what's this all about?

Not a stellar start...

I have two mice & neither was able to work; An old Microsoft ball mouse & a Compaq wireless optical mouse. Didn't think to try the wireless keyboard that acompanies the mouse, I'm using an old Compaq keyboard.

And so it goes...

Suggestions?

Thanks

Doing a Google search It looks like nVidia & Linux are at odds for some people. Looking under "no pointer" and Linux or "no pointer" & Suse there's more than a few people with the problem I am having. If it means I would need to get a different batch of hardware to run Linux that means I won't be doing it. I just invested many hundreds of dollars in this hardware within the last two months and it's staying put.

Ah well, it was worth a try.

Is your mouse a PS/2 mouse or USB? What nVidia card are you using? I would try Knoppix for a different Live CD/DVD and see how it does. I doubt that the SuSE live CD uses the "nvidia" driver but possibly the "nv" version of the driver. I've never encountered this failure, but it looks like an easy fix, just add
Code:
 Option "SWCursor" "on"
to the 'Section "Device"' portion of the "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file to fix the issue. You could boot to runlevel 3 first to edit the file in text-mode then run Xwindows with the "startx" command to see if that fixed the issue.
HTH, don't want to see you give up...

Hello!

I had exactly the same problem with the live dvd.
I played about with it the best I could without being able to see where the mouse was (pressing CTRL lots), but eventually gave up.

The I decided I'd install the full version of SuSE 10.0 - and hey presto, Hello Mr Mouse Pointer!

Not sure how it works, but I'm certainly not complaining!

It's apparently a common enough problem that's been going on for awhile. It seems that it would have been resolved by now. Certainly there's enough unused room on the DVD to have nVidia drivers to work the mouse. FWIW, I have two mice attached. One is a Compaq USB wireless Optical and the other is a MS trackball with round plug. Neither were ID'd though the wireless keyboard connected to the same receiver worked just fine.

I just lucked into converting a NTFS drive to FAT32 so I will be able to use that one to load Suse 10 onto. With my DFI Lanparty board's BIOS I can hit ESC at startup and it will allow me to select which device to connect to. I will use this instead of a Linux created dual boot. If I decide I don't want Linux, I don't want to have the problem of not being able to run windows because of some hassle removing the loader & messing up M$'s blessed NTLDR. I think this will solve the problem as there's nothing on the FAT 32 drive now.

Thanks for the reply.
