First of all my sincere apologises to all the volunteers, for the in correct posting method used, ie, posting the same topic in two forums and using words such as Urgent. I am a novice to this and am not aware of these things. So, kindly excuse me and consider my post.
Actually I am stuck with this login problems in Novel-Suse, below is the description of the sam,
I am a novice to linux.
I am currently using Suse.
I have this weird problem since yesterday.
I am not able to get past login.
when I try to login in any sessios(GNOME,KDE,Default..), a message box pops up, and the message reads something like this,
You seesion Lasted for less than 10 secs.if ypou have not logged out yourself, this might be an installation problem or the disk is out of memory.
Try logging in one of the failsafe sessions and fix the problems
View the log file for details.
But when I click the view button no detail or no message is displayed.
This problem started since yesterday ,when my system admin, changed my mouse without logging off the session, and this he said was a plug & play mouse and needs no rebbot. At the same time I was trying to play some music, but I was getting a error message, something like this,
OSS dev/dsp already in use.
After this booted the system , and this loging problem started siince then.
Whwn i browsed throught posts in this forum , i found that user had similar problems with ubuntu, and the people who were ready to reply had a few questions, to which I will also answer,
1.This is the problem , if i try to login as any use ,any session except, failsafe(I am using GNOME).
2.My machine is dual boot win 2000 and Novell Suse.
I am in need of descriptive solution for this problem, as my project , on linux is to be started next week.
When you see the Login screen can you switch to a console with "Alt+Ctrl+F2" (can be F2 to F6 for text console, F7 should be the GUI with the login screen)
You should see some prompt for your username
hi, thanks for the response,
actually I am able to to switch to the command mode when i see the GUI with the login screen, by pressin "Alt+Control+F1-F6 " but if doi the same with Alt+Control+F7" ie, if i switch back to the GUI mode and try loggin in, the same problem repeats.....
And in the command mode, as soosn as I login, there is prompt that reads, you have a new mail in /var/mail/root, but when try to access the same it says Permission denied
I would not worry too much about this part of your symtoms. This occurs when two or more programs try to use /dev/dsp to send sound to your sound card. Every rare now and again, SuSE will lock the file. I don't know why, but a reboot has always fixed it for me.
As for the rest of your problem, try:
cd /var/log
ls
Look for files that start either with XFree86 or Xorg (this depends on which version of SuSE you are working with). View the end of the file by:
tail XFree86 -25 XFree86.log.old
These files should provide hints that will be useful in figuring out your problem (probably by people smarter than myself, we'll see).
ok that's great, I will trying doing that.
But, there's this that has hapnd, i created a new user using the failsafe gnome and am able to login as that user.
but i am still not able to login as root through the GUI.
Can a have another user with the same rights as root, or can replace the root with anyu other use???????

Whoa. Hold on there. Linux is not designed to provide the root user with a desktop, startmenu, etc. You are supposed to use a user account for all of your day-to-day activities. You can log in graphically as root, but you are not supposed to, and sometimes there are problems with it.
If you need root access from the GUI environment, I suggest you use a program like kdesu to give root privileges to just one program at a time. (I don't know what the gnome equivalent is, I just know that it exists)
I'm not saying that you can't log in graphically as root, just that it is not a good idea.
