i dont know anything about gaim but:

- do other programs do have sound?
- did you install the sound packages needed for gaim?
- does gaim have sound at all?
- if you open console and type: gaim
whats the output (after trying to make a sound)?
- are all soundports open, to check type in console: alsamixer

Running 'gaim' in terminal (= console) and putting its output in this forum would be the must importend one.

luck

I was able to get it to make sound by chosing method command and manually typing "play" into the command window. It's not very elegant, but it works. The sound of WAVE files in general is very tinny compared to the sound in Windows or other Linux distros, however.

The sound in general seems rather "tinny" to me, actually, but it could be the...less than quality 6 year old 3 dollar at the time speakers I am using. Once I get better ones, I will see if the sound quality improves any, I am thinking it will.
