no IP address yet... backgrounding.

Howdy,

i am trying to install suse 9.2 on a PC.

it loads and installs fine.

However, i can not get a DHCP ip address.
part of the response i get with rcnetwork start is:

eth0 device: Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11)
eth0 configuration: eth-id-00:12:17:51:1c:aa
eth0 (DHCP) . . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding.
waiting
eth1 device: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] (rev 78)
eth1 configuration: eth-id-00:01:03:42:27:4c
eth1 (DHCP) . . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding.
waiting

---
thats it. something about "backgrounding"

Now i know that the Network is set for DHCP, because if i pop in Knoppix-Live and boot off of that,
BOTH cards get an IP address!!

ANd i can ping other IP addresses just fine.

So thats my deal.
i also tried to statically set the ping addresses, but then the cards cant ping any other IPs on the network. so something is wrong...

Any thoughts why it works with Knopix-Live but not the Suse that is Installed.?

Background implies multi-tasking and in this case may mean to wait for the IP in the background and continue the boot process in the foreground (active window).

DHCP is used to assign IPs in dynamic environment. DHCP must be running on both ends of the connection. Although usually not an issue, some implementations of DHCP don't work well together. The only way around this is to assign static IP addresses. You can use DHCP to get an IP for your router but not to assign IPs for the connection of your PC to the router. Most router configurations are accessible via a static IP from a browser on your PC.
