BIOS reports that my onboard sound chip is a Sigmatel 9200. It appears as though it is recognized in Suse 10.1, although no sound comes from the speakers. When I try to play a CD with any of the audio players, the progress bar goes along as though it is playing, yet still no sound. The volume is turned up all the way. I am not concerned about getting the multimedia buttons on the front of the laptop to work, I never use them anyways. Any help getting sound from the speakers is appreciated.
Could you post the results of the command '/sbin/lsmod | grep snd' ( without the quotes. This will list the sound driver if it one is loaded. If not, we need figure out which one to load, and modprobe it.
It may also be useful for you to post the results of '/sbin/lspci' ( no quotes ). If the sound is part of the PCI bus, that will list the hardware information.
Have you opened a sound mixer, either Kmix of alsamixer and made sure the sound is not muted?

When I go into the KDE Control Center /Sounds & Mutimedia/Sound System, and click on 'Test Sound' it tries to start the sound system, but just keeps looping. It gets to 100% then starts over and keeps starting over.
Unbelievable, as I type this, all of a sudden it finally started and I have sound. When I hit the test button now, it plays...LOL
Thanks a lot camorri for trying to help, I appreciate it.
I wish I knew what I did, but it must have been the Control Center that finally got it started.
The craziest thing is happening with this laptop and SUSE 10.1.
I spent about an hour verifying this before posting, but this is what happens:
When I have 'Auto Login' enabled, I have sound when I boot the laptop.
When I disable auto login, so I have to type my password, the laptop boots with NO SOUND !!!
I cannot even get it started in the Control Center after bootup.
EDIT: OK forget all that, what is actually happening is that the sound works on every other boot. I booted and rebooted 8-10 times without touching a thing in between, and every other boot has sound.

cueman,
If you have done any kind of search here as I'm sure you did,:-) you'll notice a lot of hassle with the hda(mostly it's 'quietness' and inability at times to play with acpi). I have the same-ICH7, Intel HDA, 82801G etc., etc. And have had it working fine, tho quiet (headphones work fine), BUT...
Recently I'm getting the same "acting up". 50/50 chance of sound working. Most likely due to the recent update of ALSA. Thats my guess anyway, as both occured near the same time.
Tell me, in Yast look at miscellaneous->Veiw system log in the pull down look at messages. Do you get anything like this:
Oct 18 19:22:48 paranoid kernel: ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:565: hda-intel: send_cmd timeout: IRS=0x1, val=0x1070650

that goes on for a long scroll?

You know what, I do not have my laptop handy, but I have installed it for the second time now on my desktop. The first time went fine, I just upgraded my hard drives and ghosted Windows XP back on to the main drive. I installed 10.1 again, and it seemed to work fine, then all of a sudden no sound again. I looked at the log file on my desktop and I don't see anything like you have there, with that paranoid kernel or whatnot.
But, I did go into KMix, by clicking on the speaker icon in the task bar. I messed around with all of the output settings and all of a sudden I have sound again. Funny because I never adjusted any sound settings before I lost it. I think this distro is just plain 'ol buggy still, especially as far as sound goes. The laptop also seems to be booting with sound on a regular basis now too.
Thanks for the reply, hope you get yours figured out.
