newbie having problems - get mssg: "Software Updater - ZMD is not running"

what does this mean? Can I not install updates anymore? Is the updater down temporarily?

I am very new to this - all I know is that I have been clicking the orange icon on the panel to install updates. All of a sudden, a few days ago, a few packages would not install. I got a message about the source. So I went into YaST and removed the source from the list. And since then, I have not been able to update anything. Now I have a little icon that's a red box, with a white 'x' in the middle. I hover over it, and it says:

Quote:

"Software Updater - ZMD is not running"
The source I removed was: http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/suse/update/10.2/

I guess that was a bad idea. But why might I have issues with installing certain updates from this one source? The site seems to be up and running just fine.

I'm not an advanced computer user per se, but I'm pretty good at making s**t up as I go. I'm really lost with Linux. I need some guidance.

Here is a link to a thread on another board about that problem:

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/sus...t-running.html

If the instructions there don't help, you could try copying the zen-updater rpm from the cd to the hard drive, and re-install it manually with the rpm -U or rpm -F options.

If you try it manually, don't forget to run /sbin/SuSEconfig (without options) to update the config files that YaST would update after installing software (unless 10.X dosn't do that).

success!

I followed the link, and found [what appears to be] the answer:

[logged in as root]
Quote:

go to /var/lib/zmd and rename files: zmd.db and zmd.db-journal
one suggestion was to put an 'x' in front of the filenames (so they could retained) -- ie xzmd.db and xzmd.db-journal

another suggestion was to either use the command "rczmd restart" as root, or reboot to restart the service -- I tried to reboot ZMD with the command, it told me it failed, so I rebooted and it seems to be working just fine now

I read supposedly this was a problem in 10.1 that was supposed to have been fixed in 10.2; alas...

Thanks to bigrigdriver for the re-direct!
