New to SUSE!

Hello!

I just installed SUSE 9.1 personal on my HP Pavillion Laptop dv1000 and it works great!

However, I have two questions:

1) what do I need to do to get the built in wireless card working? I tried the network configurator tool to no avail.
2) How do I get the screen to use a higher resolution? It seems I can't change it from the desktop.

Thanks in advance,

Echo Kilo

Worked like a charm for SuSE 9.2 on my brother's HP laptop.

I'll try that. What about changing the screen resolution?

Screen res is controlled by sax2. Click the green SUSE icon (lower left) > System > Configuration > Sax2

My HP laptop is a different model. I used the 'gtf' program to generate modelines. This was handy because the screen uses 1280x800 native resolution.
example: gtf 1280 800 60 -x
This will generate a modeline for 60hz in a XF86config or XORG configuration style.

You will probably need to supply more information about the wireless device that is included on your laptop. You may need to install ndiswrapper and wireless-tools before proceding. The ndiswrapper program uses a driver written for windows. For broadcom devices, it is probably a must. Another alternative is to purchase a driver from LinuxAnt.

So if my native resolution is 1280 x 768, how do I go about setting that resolution? Do I need to use GTF (not sure what that is)?

How do I install the wireless tools you mentioned - using SUSE?

Okay, I installed ndiswrapper. What is the next step to getting my HP Intel/Pro Wireless device to work?

The gtf program is in one of the X11/bin/ directories. If you are the root user, you should be able to use it.

There is a package called either 'wireless-tools' or 'wirelesstools'. It contains the 'iwconfig', 'iwpriv' and other programs. The iwconfig program is similar to ifconfig, but for wireless.

If you need to use ndiswrapper, you need to find the *.sys and *.inf files for your wireless device. If you don't have a cd with these files, try their website, or google for it.

Then you run the ndiswrapper program.
ndiswrapper -i <filename>.inf

This creates your driver. Then to write the information needed in /etc/modules.conf, you run:
ndiswrapper -m

Since you haven't booted up with this driver before, you may need to load it in:
modprobe ndiswrapper

Now you can try to run through the wireless setup in yast. The wireless device might be showing up as a usb device, when you go to the add network device section.

Where does the *.sys file come into play? Are you saying to download the Windows drivers and use ndiswrapper to use them in linux?
