Need ACCESS to change files! Every time I try to change a setting,"Permission Denied"

My sound(ali 5451) does not work(BUT IS SHOWN AS A CONFIGURED CARD!!). When I look in my system files, It says "No Sound Cards". One place its there, and in another its not. Crazy. Also, after doing an online update, now my Acpi is screwed up! So obviously this software is not making sure that everything gets tied together. I really like this software, but its starting to get to me. If there is someone out the who knows what they are doing, PLEASE HELP. Thanks, Doug

one reason it could show up in one place and not the other is because there are several different ways to configure your sound card. How did you configure it? Where isnt it working?

what is your acpi doing that it wasnt doing before or what isnt it doing that it was doing before?

the title is need access to change files getting "Permission Denied" ... on what file when you try to edit your sound card settings or your acpi settings? or on all files? this is probably becuase you are trying to edit a file that you dont have permissions to edit ... you check who owns the file with:
ls -l

if you arent the owner or in the group that owns the file you wont be able to edit it, if the group has write permissions to the file. you will probably have to be root to edit the file. use "su -" then edit the file.

Thanks for the fast reponse!

My acpi was working just fine. On my tool bar I had a power /battery Icon which worked perfectly. After the update, now when i boot my system up, when it get to the desktop to load the toolbar Icons, it says"No acpi in kernel found". Now it only shows that AC power is on, and that there is NO BATTERY connected(Which there is), and NO battery stats. On the other hand, when I go into my hard drive files, I can click on the power management files, on open them up, and get battery %.....etc.... The sound card was found by SUSE when it was installed. I went to YAST and configured the card. It says,"snd_ali5451" configured as 0. I have no sound, alsa mixer says pipeline not found. When I click on sound it says,"No such device". BUT, when I look in my Hard drive files, THERE IT IS!...UGHHHHH
