My login randomly changed...(9.3)
 

Ok, this is odd..but out of no where, my login has changed (I did nothing). It use to log me in as my user automatically, and if I did a control + alt + backspace, it would bring me to kdm. Now, it's going to like a gray login screen...very plain looking...and there's "xconsole" messages on the bottom left. One says something about nvidia module tainting the kernel.

Anywho...as I said, this changed out of no where. How can I set it back to the default thing...where it logged me in automatically and used kdm.

Since loading the Nvidia drivers, did you change or update the kernel in any way? If so, you'll need to reinstall your Nvidia drivers.

The nvidia splash screen still comes up, and if I log in...it will let me. I haven't updated the kernel...to my knowledge...unless my SuSE watcher did it..I checked the logs and it doesn't say anything about the kernel. I'll try reinstalling the nvidia drivers though!

Err..that was odd. Some how it just switched the default display manager from kdm to xdm. Very weird! I just went into Yast -> System -> /etc/sysconfig editor and changed it back to kdm from there. All is well now :)

Your system is acting up in a very odd way - glad that you are back up and running

Happened to me before as well. Why don't you use GDM rather than the ugly KDM?

I was stuck with exactly the same problem after installing the NVIDIA-driver yesterday.
Now I saw your solution and tried it out and I can affirm that it worked well for me too.
That makes two of us, so most probably other people will experience the same thing.

That happened to me too. Took me a while to figure out figure out how to get kdm back again.

And I do also have nvidia drivers. I have only seen it that one time. A slightly old Hercules Gforce card running on my AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz machine.

It made me wonder about the various display managers and window managers though. In the etc/sysconfig files you choose one of each. What is the role of them though? Why is the task of handling the window environment split in two?

For others who get this problem..here's what to do in a bit more detail.

Open YaST..go to System, and then /etc/sysconfig editor.

Click the + next to "Desktop" to expand it. Expand "Display Managers". Click on "DISPLAYMANAGER". In the field under "Setting Of: DISPLAYMANAGER" put in whatever login manager you want to use.

In my opinion, KDM and GDM are the best. GDM is a bit nicer looking, I'm not sure if it will have you auto login settings though *if you use them*.
