mounting smb shares in Suse 9.2
Hi Folks
I've just upgraded to Suse 9.2 and am trying to setup network shares the way I used to in Mandrake. My memory is a bit flaky but I remember adding something along the lines of this to fstab: //Winbox1/mp3 /mnt/mp3 smbfs noauto, username=username, password=password 0 0 However now when I try to mount something it tells me smbmount is not supported by the kernel. Is this a 2.6 kernel feature or is something odd going on for me? Is there a way to either make this work, or do it a different way so I can still mount a share on a windows PC? All suggestions welcome! |
You don't have to mount them. There is an icon: network browsing that set up on my desktop on my own. Is there any reason you need to mount them.

I can access files that way as you suggest. However I keep all my mp3's (and other things) on those shares and to be played by xmms (for example) they need to be mounted.
As far as I know it's the same for video files (and perhaps others). |
make sure your mount point is in your fstab, and simply add that mount point to be shared in YaST under samba server.

Isn't that only for creating shares that are on that PC?
The folder on the Windows PC is shared and can be mounted from a different Linux PC. The problem with the Suse9.2 machine is that when I try to mount the share I get an error that says: ERROR: smbfs filesystem not supported by the kernel Any ideas? |
mounting smb shares definitley works on 9.2 pro (32 bit)
nothing at all has changed with the mount command you should check whether smbfs.ko is present in the modules directory at all ! btw. did you install smbclient + libraries ? |
Yes everything was installed - rebooted and all is working okay now.
Thanks for the help! Ian |
