hey guys, having a little problem here. I installed 10.1 just fine, no errors or hangups. It recognized my hardware just fine, but when i try to boot into run-level 5 my Viewsonic VA902B LCD displays an Out of Range error message. I've searched these forums for a solution and came up with something about going into sax2. so i run as a SU, type my password, no probs here, and then i get the little spinning cross thingy going on and doesnt let me edit anything. it then displays some useless information and then :startup thereby giving me the monitor error message again. I've tried reinstalling, which was a pain, and changing the resolution in the hardware section, but to no avail. My GPU is a 6600gt PCI-X16, on a k8t890 mobo from ecs. if anybody could give me an alternative to typing "sax2" that would be great and i would love you forever. thanks in advance.
I did not have that happen; double check your settings in your xorgconfig file. Make sure the screen resolution/refresh rate is set correctly. Then have a look in /etc/var/log/Xorg.0.log see if you find any errors that seem funny.
Suggestion: I had a very similar problem in 10.1 after an upgate..I had to manually configure the V&H sync as the other poster mentioned../etc/X11/xorg.conf file
I used vi to edit it but you can use anything you wish..I generally modify both the H and V to a lower number than the actual monitor specs.... ie: vert spec=150hz and I like to put it around 85hz so that I won't have an extreme refresh rate..I leave the H spec close to but slightly lower..ie:95khz to 90khz..
Then go down to the driver section and find driver="nvidia" and change it to "nv" ...Save the edit..
This brings it away from the Nvidia driver..
I rebooted but you may not have to and you should get a GUI without the nvidia (direct render)..
Reinstall your Nvidia driver to get 3D..Check it by either glxgears or glxinfo...
It worked for me..
Good Luck,
jolphil
Edit: BTW your LCD monitor may not have a vertical frequency of higher than 70hz or so..Check your particular spec..
Edit again: sorry to mislead you about the vert..That monitor is impressive...
The frequencies for your monitor are Horizontal: 30~82kHz, Vertical: 50~85Hz
Verify that your xorg.conf file (which is located in the /etc/X11 directory) are using those settings in the "Monitor" section of that file. If xorg.conf is using different numbers, you can manually edit it, save the changes, then exit and restart. If you run into trouble, just post the contents of your xorg.conf file
ok i checked the optimal frequencies for my monitor, the VA902B. i've edited the file, but now i get "Failed to initialize core devices." what am i to do????????
Is there more? There should have been a few more lines ot the error. It could have looked something like: (but not nescessarily exactly like this)
(EE) xf860OpenSerial: cannot open device /dev/psaux no such file or directory
(EE)Mouse0: cannot open input device
(EE)preInit failed for input device "Mouse0"
no core pointer
fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices
It looks as if your mouse is not configured correctly; not really sure. As I don't have the whole error. I just did a search of your error and that is what I saw in the other posts. If this is the case you can edit xorg.conf file with vi to make the changes or use the xorgconfig program again.
If you still are stuck post the relavent errors from the /etc/var/log/Xorg.0.log file; then post your xorg.conf file that will help people as well.
I just recently purchased a new Viewsonic VX2025wm LCD flat screen. I had a similar problem what worked for me is I switch from the standard VGA cable to the DVI cable my monitor came with both. Try this and see if you get results your looking for. FYI I am using Suselinux 10.0 with chaintech vnf4 ultra MOBO and a MSI NX6600 128 video card which has both VGA and DVI connectors. I hope this works for you.
