Had this problem myself. Had to download the latest driver version from the Intel webpage and tried to install (uninstalling the one included on the SuSE disc from YaST first, and deleting /dev/modem and /dev/537ep).
It wouldn't install however - I eventually figured out that this was because I was running a 64-bit kernel, which doesn't seem to be supported by the driver. I installed the 32-bit kernel and the driver installed fine - the modem is /dev/modem, which is a symbolic link that points to /dev/537ep. I ran the modem config in YaST and it configured and worked fine (although I had to configure the modem as 'Other', as when I tried to configure the detected 'Intel 537ep modem' it threatened to install the SuSE driver which I knew didn't work).
I now have another problem with the modem, which I'm about to post as a new thread, but maybe you can try the above?
