low sound quality

Why is the sound quality so low in suse 9.1 ? Music(mp3) sounds pretty bad , and movies also sound pretty bad . Can I do smth. to fix that ?

hi there,
can it be that all volumes are set to "maximum"?
this can bring some quality problems...
run alsamixer and check how is your setup.
if you see the red bars, it is not good.
decrease a little bit - around 70%...

I ran alsamixer , and got the red ones down untill they weren't red anymore , but still the sound is not good , it's the same actually .

Actually , that was it . Sound well now . I just don't understand why it didn't work the first time :) , cause there's no save buton on alsamixer , just escape to exit .

hi there,
you can save volume state writing the values at
Code:

/etc/asound.state

The values remained as I put them , without modifying assound.state , but the sounds is bad again after I restarted :( . I tried to lower , in alsamixer , even more the volumes , but it still sounds the same . What shoulld I do ?

hi there,
i don't know much about kde - what i suppose you are using.
the problem is that the sound is managed by artsd - this is kde sound server.
you have in control center some options about it. you can check priority and sound system.
anyway, i am sorry but i don't have a definitive answer.

Now I installed Suse 9.3 and I still have the same problem . I should mention though, that this time , when I start suse , the sound from the beginning doesn't sound bad at all , it sounds good , so maybe that's a wav or something , but when I try to play an mp3 it sounds as bad as it did in Suse 9.1 . Is this a plugin ,, or codec problem , or something like that ?

Anybody ?

White Spiral 08-21-2005 11:53 AM

It must be a hardware thing. What sound card/chipset are you using?

aral 08-21-2005 01:35 PM

The sound card is Avance Logic ALS4000 . If it's an hardware problem then how come sound works fine in Windows XP ?
