lost GUI (KDE) in OpenSUSE 10.2

Hello everybody,
This is my very first post, on my very first day at this site. And guess what; I'm having a bit of a problem:
My system does start, but only to the command line. This happened from one day to the next, with no apparant cause or reason. As far as I know no updates have been downloaded the last time it ran properly (ie with KDE).
When I try to execute startx it tells me that the (in my case) nvidia kernel module failed to load.
I think I have 3 options;
  • Try to get that module/driver re-installed.
  • Install some generic module/driver.
  • Lazy as I am I can do a complete system re-install (I am too used to Windows I guess).
The problem with the first two options is that I have no clue as to how to do this.
The problem with the last option is; will my data (docs, e-mail) survive in that case? Is there a possibility that this is all on /home and will that partition not be touched by a re-install?

I hope someone can help me on this one.
Thanks in advance,

Martin.

You can change to a generic video module by editing xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). Find the line that says Driver "nvidia" and change it to Driver "vesa".

The problem you have often happens because of a kernel update (or downgrade). Reinstalling the nvidia module might help. More info about that here.

Do the following as a root, just be careful, and go back to normal user as soon as you finish these steps: Go to /etc/X11 and look for the file: xorg.conf.install, rename your existing xorg.conf to something else, next rename xorg.conf.install to xorg.conf and fire up Suse! This should work. This will give you back your GUI but not nvidia driver. This happend to me, so I rename the xorg.conf.nvidia to xorg.conf, of course I save my running xorg.conf to xorg.conf.install or xorg.conf.working, and fire up Suse again. It works! Hope this help you.

So don't panic, we're here to help you.
