"lock screen" locks whole system

i use SuSE 9.1 on an old HP Pavilion P3 750/ 512MB/onboard Intel video/20 GB WD
whenever i choose 'lock screen' from the kde menu, or whenever the password-protected screensaver starts, my computer requires a restart to work properly. the screensaver will start, and if i move the mouse i get a dialog to input my password, which i do. pressing enter and/or clicking ok does nothing. pressing cancel goes back to the screensaver. switch user sometimes brings me back to the initial login screen, and sometimes locks me up. even if i do get to the login screen and finally back to my desktop, i have maybe 5 minutes before either the system freezes or just goes back to the text-only prompt and asks for a login. at this point i restart cause i don't know much about the non-graphical stuff.

my screensaver is the matrix and the only programs that would be running behind it are kopete (logged in but away) and Folding@Home. hopefully there's a solution to this, it's really frustrating.
