Laptop Brightness

Hey, this should be either a quick how-to or not possible. I want to lower the brightness of my laptop's screen. Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 and I don't think I can do it on the laptop hardware itself, so I need the way to do it within SuSE 9.2. Thanks a bunch for any help in advance! -Bill

Silly question, but have you tried key combinations? I have a newer Toshiba Satellite and those things for me are hardware controlled. If you have a Toshiba BIOS, and do be aware that many Toshiba's have a Phoenix BIOS and not one native to Toshiba, you can install fnfx to take care of that. In SuSE, if you go into YaST to add/remove, you'll find that two Toshiba utilities are there for you to install automatically.

Well, I have tried the ol' random fn key combos and what not, but without luck. I have toshutils installed, but was unaware there was a second one. I will look into fnfx as I think I have a native Toshiba BIOS. Thanx a bunch

Does fnfx work for you? If not, could be a Phoenix BIOS. (I only mention this because I recently discovered mine was not Toshiba.) Look for "toshiba utilities" in YaST software.

Yes, fnfx works, and gives me full functionality with the fn keys. Now I need to find out what key combo gives me brightness control!

Same problem with my Toshiba satellite Pro 4600 laptop. I couldn't adjust the brightness or contrast. Even when I used Fn + almost keys but it has not changed although some functions as lock, sound ... ok.Does anyone can help me to solved it. I think pro 4600 laptop doesn't support brightness function ??

If you use KDE, you can adjust the gama through the Configure Desktop -> Display -> Monitor Gama dialog.

You can also add a line like this to the Monitor section of xorg.conf:
Gamma 0.90 0.90 0.90

Pretty much. The native way is to use fn+f2, but that only gives you 2 or 3 settings. When running on battery, it will lock in at the lowest brightness setting. The only other way to adjust brightness is to do what jschiwal suggested, and modify the gamma (either in KDE or in xorg.conf).
