Kernel (from Suse or from kernel.org)

I haven't been using Suse for that long ( a few months ) but i'm pleased with it but i've got a question. Am i able compile my own kernel from kernel.org or not. I used to use mandrake and there it causes some problems because they have edited parts of the kernel and you get errors with some kernels. Is this the case with Suse or can i compile my own. The reason is that i just installed Suse on my new laptop and the newer kernels have much better acpi support for it.

You can always try :) It will take you time, but yes, you can try. I don't know if it is wise to use SuSes kernel or the standard one. Try using the standard one, but leave the old one be, so you can restore to it, if the new one doesn't work (and you don't get a veggie out of your computer:) )

I just tried it and everything compiles cleanly
Ok it works the only thing i had to do is reïnstal submount, the provided rpm only works with the stock kernel , if you don't do that you'll end up with an error during booting, but it will still boot nicely however you'll not be able to automount cd, floppy etc. The source can be found at http://submount.sourceforge.net/

Is it allowed to post links to other forums?

Anyway, here is a link to a very nice howto on compiling a kernel.org kernel for SuSE (unfortunately only in german):

i did have some problems trying to compile the submount from the sources i got from SF but it turns out that suse comes with the sources (km_submount). On how to install it read this http://www.linuxforum.com/forums/ind...owtopic=109476

I understand a little german so i'll try that howto or ill just use a online translator
