Exclamation KDE won't load

Hello everyone. I am having some trouble with my SUSE 10.1 install not loading KDE. I was using xgl for the past 2 months with no problems. But, earlier this week I turned on my PC and was sent to the command line and not my desktop UI. I tried using the "startx" command, but it just gives me a bunch of errors (after failing to load). I have also tried updating the repositories, but get the same result. I don't really mind if I have to reinstall. But, I have a few docs and images that I need to get off of the partition before I reinstall. I don't know much command line stuff so is there anyway to either get gnome installed or can someone tell me how to move my files from my partition to a USB drive? If any more info is needed I will be more than glad to provide it if I can. Thanks

Sorry to add to the n00bishness of the question. But, how can I get the log? I found where it is located, but I don't know how to launch it. I'm new to most of this linux command line stuff.

cd /var/log/

then

xemacs Xorg.0.log

or

vi Xorg.0.log

depending on which text editor you prefer.

Easy,

- Perps.

does using xgl automatically mean you are also using xorg? I had the same problem, and am trying to fix it still.
