I've been using Linux for about 2 years and I certainly wouldn't have got as far as I have without help from all the fantastic people who frequent the various forums and willingly share their expertise with less knowledgeable members. What I always do, once I've learned something new, is to add it to my ever-increasing personal "how-to" notes. Even with my as yet limited experience I sometimes find I can help someone else out, which is nice.

I think as you say it's all probably down to getting a steer in the right direction and then once you've solved the particular problem, you can often adapt the method to fixing something else. With each problem solved you gain a little more insight into the system.

Many thanks for the Gnome links, which I will have a look at.

The search button in my Suse/KDE Help center seems to be permanently grey'ed out so I can't seem to search at all. When I go to create a search index, there aren't any documents to select or de-select. I do have an index folder that contains a bunch of files that are about 1 month old. I guess that I need to figure out how to re-configure it.

You need to update your yast repositories to add pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.2/yast-source.

These threads should help get you going -
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...91#post1537791

Once you get yast to download the rpms then there are a number of threads (including this one) that discuss the minor problems related to upgrading.

yeah tried that but without any luck, i dont think that the linux in the path was the problem, anyway anyhow, i found on this great site a good hint and i updated yesterday successfully my KDE to 3.4 without any problems.

How to add new sources to YaST ( post #10)

None of them is for YOU. The Yast Online Update (YOU) has it's own list of servers. You shouldn't need to change these.

This list is for adding installation sources to the Yast module 'Install and Remove Software'. What may has caused a little confusion is, that adding sources enables you to install 'updates' of KDE and Gnome. But it has nothing to do with the security updates and bugfixes you get via YOU.

So what you do is:

Open Yast -> System -> Change Source of Installation
click 'Add' -> FTP (or HTTP in case of the packman source)
specify the server and the directory

Note: no slashes in the server entry, no leading slash in the directory entry, do not specify a path in the 'Server' field.

just an example (don't use the main server, find mirrors here):

Server: ftp.suse.com
Directory: pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source/

To update e.g. KDE, add (only) the KDE source like above, open the 'Install and Remove Software' module, select the filter 'Installation Summary', check 'Keep' and click all entries that appear blue until the greenish 'update' sign appears, then 'Accept'.

From Packman you can receive a lot of recent multimedia packages, codecs etc.

i have 2 non-major things id like to fix in kde,
1.) in kde 3.4 i cant seem to login as root anymore, kdm says no root logins allowed. personally its no big deal to me but there are times id like to be able to.

2.) i was jus wondering how to edit the right-click menu in kde, id like to throw in some of my own entries, again, no big deal but id jus like to be able to
