I just tried to make a data dvd project with K3b (version 0.12.5-3).
I clicked on format dvd from the menu. The message box says it was successful but when I view the disk info, it says it's not formatted.
When I try to burn my project, all it does is give me a preformatting message box and keeps opening and closing the dvd's door and constantly trying to format the dvd.
The media was detected (Sony dvd+rw on a Sony drive).
I have SuSE 10, kernel 2.6.13-15.8 and using KDE 3.4.2 level b.
I had my husband check the disk for me on his mac and it said that the disk was read-only for some reason. He checked some others and found one that allowed him to format it. I'll see if a disk formatted from the mac would work.
I'm hoping that the read-only situation was the problem.
There is no need to separately format a CD/DVD before using. K3B will do what ever is required. CD/DVD's come in both write once and read/Write. Write once will labeled -R or +R, Read/Write media is RW.
Thank you for your reply. The media I had in the drive was a DVD+RW and when it came time to write to it, all K3b did was keep opening and closing the door and trying to format the disk.
We even tried that disk in a windows machine and it couldn't do anything with it so I guess it was the disk that had the problem.
I tried another disk and got a little further but K3b gave me different errors (I didn't think to save that info but I will try again).
I use K3B frequently. In normal operation when you tell it burn a disk, it will check for media type and writing speed. If it's RW media with something on it, you are prompted to see if you want to erase. Although I can't attest to their value, there are CD/DVD cleaning disks with tiny brush like appendages that sweep the lens clean. You might want to try that if you've had the writer for a while.
