Just wondering - is SUSE related to Debian?

Just wondering, but I read somewhere (sorry, I forgot where; either in a book or on the internet) that SUSE was closely related to Debian, with YaST repositories and a similar selection tool. Is SUSE actually a Debian-based distribution using RPMs, is it just a coincidence that they are similar, or are they completely different and I have no idea what I am talking about?

actually, suse is a slackware derivative. that was long ago and far way though. they translated slackware into german for a while then released suse 4.2 as their first all suse version. the apt4rpm package manager is available for suse, and apt came from debian, so maybe that is what you heard.
