Just switched from Windows....

I just installed SUSE 9.2 Pro and I'm not exactly sure how to login and get to the KDE Desktop. When I boot my compI get the Grub bootloader and start SUSE, it goes through and loads everything but ends in the black kernel screen with a login and I have no idea how to get it to go into the desktop GUI... Can anyone help?

Hmmm....sounds like you are booting in a level 3 entry for some reason. This will usually finish with the login command prompt. Try entering your root name and password for the login. Then type in "kdm" [no quotes] and hit enter.

Just tried logging in as root and typing kdm and nothing.... linux:~ # is what it stays at. Is there a way to change how it what level it boots into?

In that case I'd say you have a Xconfig problem. Changing the run level won't have any effect in this situation. Next time, instead of typing "kdm", try "startx" instead and see if you get some error messages returned.

Or try going into runlevel 5 which should try to start X.

whatever you try if it fails then save the output from the commands that fail and post it. that will help clarifying what the actual problem is.

Thanks guys, I think I'm just going to reinstall.

Is there a problem with SUSE and PCI Express? I've got an ATI Radeon V3100 FireGL card and I'm not able to get it to use the multihead support. It's not recognizing it as a dual head card.
