Is ZMD worthwhile?
 

Hi all,
I have 10.1 oss and it works fine but for the fact that it is incrediblely slow booting..
Booting with a 3.0 gig reasonably fast computer takes fully 5-6 minutes to complete.....
Heres what I mean, when the computer is started i get to the desktop and open "TOP" ..I follow the CPU usage and the first to gobble up CPU bits is ZMD for at least 2-3 minutes then comes "Parse-Metadata" for another couple of minutes and finally "Update-status" which consumes 100% CPU for even more minutes...I got rid of Beagle who was also grabbing his share..During the first 5 to 6 minutes while the above is
taking place the hard drive light is fully on or close to it..
BTW 10.0 boots on the same computer less than 1.5 minutes..Done..

My question is how can I speed up this process? Do I really need ZMD?
I understand that it is an updater but can I use something else?
This is just not acceptable for any operating system IMHO..
I welcome all suggestions (yes even the negative ones) to help..

1) you can clean up zmd (cahe)
1a) and then update it

3) I have got rid of zmd altgether
3a) how:
stop zen service (not required but more elegant):
Yast -> System -> System Services (runlevel) -> disable NOVELL zen


next uninstall:

libzypp-zmd-backend
zen-updater
ruby-zypp
rug
zmd
mono-core
mono-core-32bit
mono-data
mono-web
log4net
dbus-mono
glib-sharp2
gtk-sharp2

do not try to uninstall:
libzypp
libzypp-devel
these two libs have dependencies with half of Yast modules

now, Yast is stable and fast (though server synch takes more time than previous versions)

4) add another packager e.g. apt or smart


5) close all unused services
5a) trim down GUI (all KDE/Gnome/whatever_you_are_using crap)
6) on my AMD box (AMD3200, 2GB RAM) boot time 40 sec
6a) on my laptop (core duo t2500, 1GB RAM) boot time 1 min 10 sec

your machine should start as fast (more or less) or faster (if better CPU) than mine

and say thank you to Broch for posting

I rebooted 10.1 today and watched the CPU sit at c. 100% for quite a while due to the zmd stuff

I couldnt stop the sservice via YaST or via the command line so I was brutal and simply killed it, then worked my way through the list of items to get rid of to prevebt it running away with the machine again.

all i can see software update.

Great tutorial and info. I just uninstalled zmd on my Suse 10.1 system because ZMD was giving me a strange error at boot. Its gone and everything is running smoothly.

At last!

I was trying to get rid of this zen-stuff since I installed suse 10.2, I followed this steps and now my machine flies! ...no more this 10-minutes-waiting every time I log on =)

following your instraction I removed zmd on my linux 10.2 32 bit box and everything goes much smoother and faster.

Better late than never. The whole ZMD thing was out of control (Beagle too). parse-metadata and update-status "owned" my cpu most of the time! Thanks 'broch' for pointing us in the right direction. Had some dependency errors after checking off (for delete) your "shopping" list but was so frustrated I went ahead and cleaned plow on those dependencies and Beagle too! It's ALL good now.

Because of dependencies I only uninstalled the following packages which I believe are the ones that are related to zmd:

zen-updater
rug
zmd
libzypp-zmd-backend


I also uninstalled beagle.

The others gave me some dependencies with some software I wasn't sure I wanted to get rid of. I will try to uninstall the other packages I did not uninstall and post a list of their dependencies.

I am attempting to uninstall glib-sharp2 but it is giving me a dependency conflict with gmime 2.2.3-20.i586. Anyone know what gmime does? gmime needs glib-sharp2 and I'm not sure if I should get rid of gmime or not.

glib-sharp2 needs mono-core so I didn't uninstall that one yet. Can someone please tell me what is this gmime 2.2.3-20.i586?
