I just did a clean intall of SUSE Linux 10.0. The first time I booted into it the mouse worked fine in the login screen, but when I went into KDE or Gnome the mouse pointer was invisible. When I moved the mouse around I could see when it went over icons, but could never see the pointer itself. When I went into the menu in KDE the whole thing froze up. It didn't freeze at all in Gnome. I have the 32-bit version installed and the mouse is a Logitech USB Wheel Mouse.
Alt-F2 gives you Run window
enter yast2
cursor down to Hardware
Tab to frame on right
cursor to Mouse
Enter
This will start Mouse configuration. I had mouse problems in prior releases and this worked for me. I'm not having a problem with 10.0 that I upgraded from 9.3. Perhaps I would have had a problem if I'd done a clean install.
Yast2 needs to be runned as root. Maybe you're logged on as standard user, what is recomended
Therefore do a 'su -'
Then enter the root password
then execute yast2 ;-)
It could be, that you have to switch the runlevel to single user mode: init 3
You can also try to reconfigure X if yast2 doesn't work:
Okay, I tried everything suggested so far and nothing has worked. I can't do anything at all in KDE, since everything freezes up as soon as I open a window (such as the terminal). I booted into the failsafe prompt and did everything suggested from there and nothing has worked. Any other ideas?
I don't have a solution but do know what I would do next -- a new clean install. There may a configuration file or such that is corrupted and without knowing which one I'd insure that they all are set to defaults. Best of luck and keep us informed. It might be helpful if we knew what your hardware configuration was.
I just tried to run SaX2 and it completely froze up on me. I don't know if that can affect the visibility of the mouse or not. Also, the system doesn't freeze as fast in GNOME as it does in KDE. It freezes as soon as I try to do anything in KDE, but I can mess around a bit in GNOME before it freezes. Maybe some of this info will prove helpful.
I seem to remember some issues with nvidia drivers for some card models. Nothing specific but I'd google a bit on the 6600 and SuSE. You may need to get an updated driver directly from nvidia. Just a thought.
Apparently it was a problem with the driver. I am writing this post from within SUSE and everything is running beautifully. I installed the newest driver from the failsafe prompt and that seems to have fixed everything. Thank you to everyone for their help (especially fragos, who suggested checking the driver).

hi kens8. I am having the exact same problem
I tried both SuSE 9.3 and SuSE 10.0 and even bought a new Logitech Mouse (M/N: M-SBF 96) for $6 but the problem persists
my mouse is detected as Logitech Mouse ExplorerPS/2 and it works but I cant see the cursor at all.
I also have a gfx card nVidia 6800GS with latest drivers installed 81.98
is this driver not recognized or what?
tell me what to do exactly
please also post your xorg.conf file
pretty please !!!!!
The newest driver from NVIDIA is 8178. Is that what you meant? I would download the 8178 driver from the NVIDIA webpage and save it someplace you can easily get to from the failsafe prompt (I actually saved mine on a usb drive), then manually install it from that prompt. It should work then. If it does, don't forget to go into yast and "update" it there. It'll reinstall the newest driver and add it to the kernel, so that you won't have to reinstall it every time the kernel is updated.
