Intermittent Sound

I have a problem that I thought was cured when I reinstalled SuSe 10.0, but started again today, after running the online update. The sound stops working until I open the sound configuration in YaST and click "finish". without making any changes in configuration...it just starts working until it decides to stop, and I have to repeat the same procedure.

Another sound issue, which I doubt is directly connected, is that I'm unable to play internet radio on Amarok, even though it worked fine before the update. I do recall that there was some kind of update involving a Helix/Real Player engine for Amarok, which may be the reason that it doesn't work now, however, my preferred player, XMMS does not work either. When I select a Shoutcast playlist file, either downloaded or selected from their webpage, Amarok opens but nothing happens. Unfortunately, I selected to allow Kfmclient to automatically select Amarok for the playlists and I do not know how to change that to another player. Yet, I don't know if it would matter if I did, because I suspect that something may be wrong, other than the players. When I tried using Rhymbox, I got the following error:

"No element is present to handle the streams mime type audio/mpeg"

If all of this seems confusing, I totally agree. That is why I'm asking questions and hoping that someone has a clue as to what is happening?
