Installed openSuse - KDE4 wont load

I just installed openSuse on top of windows (P4 - 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon Vid card) via the openSuse 11 DVD I pulled off torrent (chose KDE 4 option). I can navigate the command line, but I cant get anything to load. YAST shows a blank blue screen with apparantly no options and 'startkde' gives a 'command not found' error, even as root. It is almost as if nothing was installed except the bare bones operating system. Any ideas?

If you have a command line just to be sure that KDE is not installed
as root in the command line type whereis kde and whereis KDM
If it is not installed you can try to install using zypper
see man zypper and zypper help
Hope it helps

'whereis kde' produces:

Code:

kde:
'whereis kdm' produces

Code:

/usr/bin/kdm  /usr/bin/X11/kdm

Does this mean KDE didnt get installed? And if so, why would that happen? The install seemed like it was just installing everything for me...

Yes it means that kde is not installed , so try to installed it
You can try to reinstall every thing or just kde
Why it is not installed do not know

The only thing I can think of is that I assumed all the packages on the DVD are installed by default and in actuality none of them are...either that or something went wrong with the install/DVD torrent.

Even if you run Mdcheck it is still possible that the install media is not
correct.
That is one reason I prefer the CD downloading is much sorter so the changes that something is going wrong is smaller.
Ok is than only a basic install with KDE or Gnome.
After the basic install it is possible to ad as many GUIS and applications as you wish.
But to works in this way you need adsl connection and patience
